FIOREs first community project
Poverty is the biggest obstacle in the socio-economic development of underprivileged families in Pakistan. The cultural norms in Pakistan put the burden of earning on the shoulders of males and women are bound to domestic duties. However the vital role of women in sharing the overall household responsibilities, including economic, is a historic fact.
Keeping this in view FIORE opened up a community centre starting community based income generation workshops for women from underprivileged families in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. The overall aim of these workshops is “empowerment through skill enhancement” through home based income generation.
Through the workshops FIORE intends to provide opportunities for women on two very important aspects of family life, economic and social . Economically the workshops will give them increased skills, confidence and a platform for a potential family income. Socially the home base income generation will allow them more time to be spent in caring of their families and on their own personal development. More importantly it can transform the household relations giving them a greater role in decision making.
The proposed workshops are:
Candle making
Ribbon Embroidery
Fabric painting
The first of the three workshops, candle making was started in Aug 2016, the announcement received an overwhelming response from the community therefore registration of participants was limited to first come first serve basis. A total of 10 participants are currently attending the workshop conducted by an expert vocational trainer.
After the completion of the workshop FIORE will facilitate the women in establishing contacts with local organizations and financial institutions that promote and help with establishing small businesses.
